Healthy memory, healthy brain

Looking after our customers requires many different qualities, and one of them is a good memory. DRIVE editor Neena Baid explains how you can look after your brain as part of your career plan.

To make memories your brain must do something called encoding, this is when the neurons in your brain pass information back and forth until the two are linked together.

To keep your brain healthy you should exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet with plenty of ‘good’ fats and lots of vegetables. You can also meditate, take silent moments and get a good night’s sleep.

Did you know? Your brain also loves to play games! These help to entertain and exercise it, and in turn make the brain more alert and increase memory capacity.

  1. Blindfolding – wear a blindfold at home and try to memorise where things are in each room as you walk around. Your brain is then forced to create images to remind itself of each location. Move things around next time you do it for a fresh challenge.
  2. Write down eight words, close your eyes, try to recall each word. Then add an image to each word and try to recall them again. Repeat this exercise, adding two words each time until you can remember many more words without looking at your list.
  3. Try the second exercise again clenching your right fist for 90 seconds, and then when you recall the words, clench your left fist. This is a great way to exercise the sections in your brain that work on memory.
