Parents at work

Aimed at engaging and empowering parents working in the rental operation, U4 recently held its first Parents’ Committee meeting.

The Group wanted parents to come together to discuss best practice on how best to balance two important responsibilities: career and family time.

The goal was to develop a best practice guide that can be shared with all U4 employees – even those who may not yet be parents and who may be planning for a family or thinking about options when they have one.

The committee discussed how the company can make rental roles manageable to employees, across all levels, when they become parents.

The group consisted of rental employees from Assistant Manager through to Group Rental Manager level.

The committee reviewed how their approach to their career may change after becoming a parent and how the need for efficiencies became a bigger priority to achieve their work/life balance once children need to be factored in.

Some of the discussion points included:

  • creating and managing rotas
  • designing operational plans
  • introducing balanced shift options
  • best practice for effective team communications, especially when working part- or flexi-time
  • achieving efficiencies overall.

The discussion raised many interesting perspectives and ideas for development. The conclusion is that the Parents’ Committee is an ongoing project with a longterm remit.

Another meeting is planned for the summer.
