Wanted: Female Group Rental Managers

In the last edition of Drive, Leigh spoke about the 80:20 rule and we talked about choosing to do something different from a leadership perspective. We spoke about role modelling and coaching employees that are different from you. How is that going? As we develop our leadership styles, these are important skills for your tool box.

This year, I am delighted to say the number of women in area rental manager roles has nearly doubled, but we are still hovering at that 20% mark in terms of the number of women area rental managers to men. However, I need your help with this – how do we move forward? How do we continue to make progress in our fiscal year goal setting just like we do with other metrics?

We have to focus on attracting, retaining and developing the best talent, which means diverse talent. It is no secret that inclusive companies are out-performing companies that are not as diverse. For us, this enables us to provide the best service possible to our diverse customer base.

Recently, I have been presented information regarding gender pay reporting. In some areas, results are pleasing, but I am still really surprised that we don’t have any women today in the position of group rental manager. Obviously, we have some fantastic general managers – Diane, Bridget, Janene – who were once group rental managers. But where are our candidates for these positions today? Are we making that position attractive to a wide enough audience?

We continue to challenge our management team to develop the broadest talent pool of candidates. Success for me in FY17 would be having confident women as applicants for group rental manager openings. Which one of you will be the first to rise to the challenge today?
