Making light work of a big move
Four years since starting as a management trainee, Katherine Barker is moving to Ireland for a 12 month secondment in HR. Caroline Cuthbertson asked: how did you make relocation work?
Why did you feel this was the right career decision?
“After two years in talent acquisition I knew I was ready to make the next move – this role makes me a better-rounded HR employee which will help my next promotion.”
What support did you receive from Enterprise to help you with relocation?
“I received great support from my line manager, Emma Grant. Dan Jones (U8’s Accounting Supervisor) also did a six month secondment in Ireland. He gave me huge support. The team in Ireland made the transition run as smoothly as possible.”
Where there any obstacles you had to overcome during the process of relocation?
“I was given ample information from Leslee and the team on what needed to be done on certain HMRC tax and Irish PPS constraints. “Finding a flat was not too tricky as I came for a weeklong visit before moving to find accommodation, which was also a great way to meet the team.”
What are your personal goals now you are in Ireland?
“Within 12 months I want to see retention rise across rental and admin employees. I want to roll out new initiatives such as revamping new hire induction and make the onboarding process more stream-lined.
“We want to be country project lead for a new ‘Subject Matter Expert’ system, to roll it out across the group and to train others in it.”
What advice would you give somebody who wants to relocate?
“Do it – it’s the best thing you can do for your career!”
